Sunday Outing

First- let me say one week down- 7 to go! Sigh.

Today I got up late and went to church off-base. It seems singing Happy Birthday before starting is the way things are done down here. We had a gentleman turning 90! Later, we sang again because it was revealed we had a woman turning 90 plus. Once you get that old I think it is ok to reveal your age. 90 plus??

After church I did another run since due to the rain I did not run on Thursday or Friday. I ran fast, hoping to get my time down. Then I realized it was too fast and I could not keep the pace up. I stopped to walk and recover, then repeated until I had done the full 1.5 miles. My time was the same as during the sleet run, but I felt this might be a good way to get my speed up, since I really pushed myself.

Next I drove off base to take in the sights at the beach. As you will notice in the photos the horrible rain/ sleet/ freezing temperatures have departed us and it was very pleasant. I was wearing a sweater but took it off for the photo since in makes me look pregnant and I don't want to get anyone's hopes up. So with the sweater the weather was perfect.

Beach day.

Lots of local history.

Any ideas what this sign might mean?

Some shore birds standing on a sand bar.

Looking back at the beach from the pier.

The very end of the pier. Sadly, there was a couple with four annoying barking dogs that were very upset with my presence and would not stop barking. The owners kept repeating the dog's names- I suppose "Stop that" is the same thing as the dogs' names- makes sense, right? No? Some other people came down the pier and the dogs went off again so I left. THAT is one example of why dog ownership is under attack.

Looking towards one of the casinos. The freeway and the pier walkway. Without the walkway you would have to cross the freeway on-ramp and that is not very safe.

Same view zoomed out.

The pier was very long, yet the water stayed shallow the entire time. I am guessing knee deep. Due to the lack of waves, it was also clear.

Me on the pier. Before I left due to annoying dogs and clueless owners.

I can't get over the lack of waves. I've seen bigger waves in a swimming pool.

On the freeway pier. Besides no waves, and a long shallow area, another difference from CA is the lack of graffiti. There was a few scrawls, but overall- very clean. You know in LA everything would have been covered.

Looking back at the pier.

A lobster trap. I think.

I spotted this C-130. Keesler flies them (as does my base.)

After exiting the freeway pier I came upon a casino. So I went in.

I had some luck with this machine. I put in $20, got up to $30, then cashed out at $10. After cashing out, I walked back to my car.

The lighthouse.

It turns out you can go up in it! Up the winding staircase, up a ladder, though a trapdoor and up to the top! Guess where I'll be next Saturday at 9 am?

After my little beach/ pier/ freeway pier/ casino/ lighthouse adventure I went to a late lunch/ early dinner at Applebees, then came back to my room to update my blog, do the laundry, and listen to my next door neighbor watch the Super Bowl. I can hear when there is a touch down based on his cheers, but I don't know who he is rooting for so it isn't very helpful. I suppose I could turn on my TV. I was informed the commercials are funny. But instead I will read my book a bit more (went through 3 books already and am now on Dick Francis Crossfire) then off to bed to be ready for Week 2 of IT Fundamentals Basics.
